Etymology of Hueling

What does the name Hueling mean?

The name Hueling was spawned by the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture that ruled a majority of Britain. It comes from the baptismal name Hugh. 1 As the naming tradition grew in Europe baptismal names began to be introduced in many countries. Baptismal names were sometimes given in honor of Christian saints and other biblical figures. There are very few Christian countries in Europe that did not adopt surnames from these religious figures.

Early Origins of the Hueling family

The surname Hueling was first found in at the court of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066,) where Hugolin was Chamberlain to the King. 1

After this earliest entry for the family, the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 had listings with many spellings scattered throughout ancient Britain: Hugelin, alias Hueltn Sampe, Lincolnshire; Nicholas filius Hugline, Lincolnshire; Henry Hulin, Norfolk; Warin Huline, Cambridgeshire; Alexander filius Hugelin, Cambridgeshire; Simon Huweline, Cambridgeshire; and William Huweline, Cambridgeshire. Later, the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 included entries for Johannes Huelyn and Alanus Hoghlyn. 1

As a first name Hueline de Uggeshale was listed in Norfolk, temp. William II. 2

In an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled.
