The distinguished Spanish surname Hollguin is of nickname origin, derived from a nickname that illustrated a personal attribute or physical characteristic of the original bearer. In this instance, the surname derives from a diminutive form of the Castilian word "holgado," from the verb "holgar," meaning "to rest" or "to be inactive." However, beginning with the fourteenth century, the meaning of "holgar" changed slightly, meaning "to enjoy oneself," "to be happy."

Hollguin Early Origins

The surname Hollguin was first found in Cáceres, in the ancient kingdom of Castile, where the family held their ancestral seat. Early references show that Juan Alvarez de Holguin was Governor of Castelbono in 1292, a position which was also held by Juan Peres Holgin in 1460.
