Etymology of Hetherman

What does the name Hetherman mean?

The surname Hetherman comes from the original Irish Ó hEadroman.

Early Origins of the Hetherman family

The surname Hetherman was first found in the barony of Moyarta, County Clare (Irish: An Clár) located on the west coast of Ireland in the province of Munster, where family tradition has it that bearers of the name are descendents of the ferrymen and fishermen of Saint Seanan. Saint Seanan is said to have given them the privilege that no one bearing the name Hetherman should drown in the region between Inis-Cathaigh and Kilcardin. And it is still maintained that none ever have, though almost all are boatmen. Another family tradition states that Saint Seanan appeared before a husbandman by the name of Senanimus O'Hettromain.
