The founding heritage of the Heringhan family is in the Anglo-Saxon culture that once dominated in Britain. The name Heringhan comes from when one of the family worked as a person who made a living by catching or selling herring. Early examples of the surname Heringhan come from the Old French word hareng, while later examples come from the Old English word hering, which was originally derived from the Old English words hæring and hering; these words all mean herring. Occupational names such as Heringhan frequently were derived from the principal object associated with the activity of the original bearer, such as tools or products. These types of occupational surnames are called metonymic surnames.

Heringhan Early Origins

The surname Heringhan was first found in Oxfordshire where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

The Great Migration

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Heringhans to arrive in North America: Christopher Hering arrived in Philadelphia in 1783 along with George and Jacob; Joseph Herring settled in Barbados in 1635; Simon Herring settled in Virginia in 1663.
