England Scotland Early Origins of the Hatle familyThe surname Hatle was first found in Berwickshire, Scotland where they became a prominent Border Clan defending the eastern marches. They had joined the train of King David of Scotland in 1124 and were granted lands. "William de Hatteley, son of Sir Robert dictus de Hatteley and Matilda his wife, with the consent of his wife Emma, about 1230 granted to the monks of Kelso a right of way through his land of Mellerstan and permission to build a bridge over the Blackburn. Another Robert de Hetlye, who possessed lands in Faunes and Melockstan, is probably Robert de Hattely who in 1270 witnessed a charter by William de Alwentum (Alwinton) to the Abbey of Melrose of the lands of Halsinton. John de Hetlyn and Alexander de Hetlye appear in 1292, and Alexander de Hateleye rendered homage [to King Edward I of England] at Elgyn en Morreve, 1296.
