Early Origins and Etymology of Hannyngton

The surname Hannyngton was first found in Hannington, a parish, in the union of Brixworth, hundred of Orlingbury Northamptonshire. Literally the place name means "estate associated with a man called Hana," from the Old English personal name + "-ing" + "tun." 1

There are two other parishes so named, one in Southampton and the other in Wiltshire, but the Northamptonshire parish is the one that the family originates for this one dates back to before the Conquest when it was first listed as Hanningtun in 1023. The Domesday Book of 1086 listed the place as Hanitune. It also includes an entry for Alfuuin de Haminteuna, de Haningtuna, de Hanningetuna. Almost one hundred years later, John de Haninton was listed in the Pipe Rolls of Hampshire in 1176. 2

"In a charter of A.D. 1023 Hannington (Hants) occurs as Hanningtun in the Latin portion and as Hanittún (tó Hanitúne) in the Anglo-Saxon (boundaries) part. " 3

Adam de Hanington was listed in Westmorland, 30 Edward III (during the 30th year of King Edward III's reign.) 4
