The origins of the name Hanncach are with the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. The name is derived from from the baptismal name for the son of John, which was originally derived from the diminutive form Hann, a popular English name derived from the Flemish Hann, when translated means John. The suffix cock was added to the surname to indicate familiarity.

The Great Migration

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Hanncachs to arrive in North America: Edward Hancock settled in Barbados in 1654; George Hancock settled in Virginia in 1654; John Hancock settled in Virginia in 1635; Robert Hancock settled in Barbados in 1654.
