Hailstom History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

Of all the Anglo-Saxon names to come from Britain, Hailstom is one of the most ancient. The name is a result of the original family having lived in Nottinghamshire or Wiltshire. The name could also be classified as a baptismal name as in the son of Elstan and an earlier personal name Dunstan.

Early Origins of the Hailstom family

The surname Hailstom was first found in Nottinghamshire at Elston, a small village that lies between the rivers Trent and Devon and dates back to at least the Domesday Book where it was listed as Elvestune, Eluestune and Eluestune [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

and probably meant "farmstead of a man called Eilafr" from an Old Scandinavian personal name + tun. [2]CITATION[CLOSE]

The less likely local that the name could have been derived from is Elston in Wiltshire, a hamlet in the parish of St. George which was also listed in the Domesday Book, but as Wintreburne. [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

Hailstom Spelling Variations

The first dictionaries that appeared in the last few hundred years did much to standardize the English language. Before that time, spelling variations in names were a common occurrence. The language was changing, incorporating pieces of other languages, and the spelling of names changed with it. Hailstom has been spelled many different ways, including Elston, Elstone, Elliston, Elsden, Elsdon, Elson and others.

Migration of the Hailstom family to the New World and Oceana

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Hailstoms to arrive in North America: John Elston who settled in Salem Massachusetts in 1630; John and Sarah Elston settled in Belfast, Maine in 1820.
