Early Origins of the Girdler family

The surname Girdler was first found in Lanarkshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Lannraig) a former county in the central Strathclyde region of Scotland, now divided into the Council Areas of North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, and the City of Glasgow, where they held a family seat north of the English/Scottish border. After the Norman Conquest of England many of Duke William's rebellious Barons moved north. Many were given land by King Malcolm Canmore and later by King David of Scotland. Some of these families were native Scots. In the 16th century they became known as the 'unruly clans'.
