Early Origins of the Frogs family

The surname Frogs was first found in Shropshire where one of the first record of the family was Nicholas Frog who was listed there in 1207. Later the Subsidy Rolls of Worcester listed William le Frogge there in 1275. Later again, William Frogge was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of Dorset in 1332. 1 Another source notes that John Frog was listed in Oxfordshire in the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273. 2

Alternatively the name could have originated in Scotland, for records there revealed Alexander Frog had a grant in 1447 to farm the lands of Straiton with power 'to big ane mill.' "Mr. John Frog, vicar of Inverkeithing in 1509 is doubtless the John Frog who witnessed a tack by the abbot of Cupar in 1521." 3
