The name Elsdend is part of the ancient legacy of the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is a product of when the family lived in Nottinghamshire or Wiltshire. The name could also be classified as a baptismal name as in the son of Elstan and an earlier personal name Dunstan.

Elsdend Early Origins

The surname Elsdend was first found in Nottinghamshire at Elston, a small village that lies between the rivers Trent and Devon and dates back to at least the Domesday Book where it was listed as Elvestune, Eluestune and Eluestune [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

and probably meant "farmstead of a man called Eilafr" from an Old Scandinavian personal name + tun. [2]CITATION[CLOSE]

The less likely local that the name could have been derived from is Elston in Wiltshire, a hamlet in the parish of St. George which was also listed in the Domesday Book, but as Wintreburne. [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

Elsdend has been spelled many different ways, including Elston, Elstone, Elliston, Elsden, Elsdon, Elson and others.

The Great Migration

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Elsdends to arrive in North America: John Elston who settled in Salem Massachusetts in 1630; John and Sarah Elston settled in Belfast, Maine in 1820.
