The surname Dusbury was first found in Lancashire at Duxbury, a township, in the district chapelry of Adlington, parish of Standish, union of Chorley, hundred of Leyland. Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations. Some of the first immigrants to cross the Atlantic and come to North America bore the name Dusbury, or a variant listed above: Robert Duxbury who landed in Philadelphia in 1868; Thomas Duxbury landed in the same port in 1872; John Dewsbury arrived in New Jersey in 1677; William Dewsbury arrived in Philadelphia in 1880..
