The Anglo-Saxon name Dungie comes from the family having resided in the region of Dinkley in the county of Lancashire. The surname Dungie is a topographic surname, which was given to a person who resided near a physical feature such as a hill, stream, church, or type of tree. Migration of the Dungie family

In an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Dungies to arrive on North American shores: William Dunkerley who settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1880; Benjamin Dunkerly settled in Philadelphia in 1849; followed by James in 1852; and William in 1860.
