Etymology of Desforge

What does the name Desforge mean?

The French surname Desforge was both an English and French topographic name for someone who lived near a forge or smithy.

Originally French, the name was derived from the Old French word 'forge', originally rendered in the Latin form "fabrica," (workshop). The surname is thus in most cases an indirect designation for a smith or his assistants and servants.

Alternatively, the family may have hailed from Forge in Normandy, from where the original bearer most likely took his name. More often than not the name began with the prefix "des" which was a plural form of "de" meaning "of" in English as in "of the Forge."

Early Origins of the Desforge family

The surname Desforge was first found in Britanny (Bretagne). In the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066, the name was brought into England and the earliest of the name on record appears to be Ralph del Forge, who was recorded in the year 1297 in County Yorkshire. John de la Forge appears in Canterbury during the reign of Edward I (1272-1307), and Agnes Forge of Yorkshire, along with Cecilia Forge, were listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. 1
