The ancestors of the Dennieston surname are thought to have lived in the ancient Scottish kingdom of Dalriada. The name Dennieston was given to someone who lived near a place named Danzielstoun, in Scotland. Thus Dennieston is a local surname, which belongs to a category of hereditary surnames derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.

Dennieston Early Origins

The surname Dennieston was first found in Renfrewshire, at Danzielstoun, in the parish of Kilmalcolm. "The manor took its name from some man named Daniel, and it bore this name as early as the reign of Malcolm IV", [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

The Great Migration

Significant portions of the populations of both the United States and Canada are still made up of the ancestors of Dalriadan families. Some of those in Canada originally settled the United States, but went north as United Empire Loyalists in the American War of Independence. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the ancestors of many Scots on both sides of the border begin to recover their collective national heritage through Clan societies and highland games. Some of the first North American settlers carried this name or one of its variants: Sam Denniston who settled in New York in 1774; and John Denniston, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1802.
