Scotland Early Origins of the Cusay familyThe surname Cusay was first found in Aberdeenshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Obar Dheathain), a historic county, and present day Council Area of Aberdeen, located in the Grampian region of northeastern Scotland, where they held a family seat in their territories in the parish of Leochel and Cushnie. "These two ancient parishes, the etymology of the names of which is altogether uncertain, were united in 1618, by a decreet of the lords of Plat; but this union was dissolved about three years subsequently, by the influence of Bishop Patrick Forbes, a central church for the two districts not having been built according to the conditions of the annexation." 1 A wide variety of spellings were found in early records. " John Cusne witnessed sasine of third part of Drumfiogne, 1508, and in 1534 another John Cowsny witnessed sasine by Master Alexander Ramsay. A payment was made to Donald Cousny, an invalid, in 1509. Gavin Cusny was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1526. William Cusne was prebendar of the Collegiate church of Methven in 1549, Thomas Quishney was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1560, and James Cusnye or Cuschny was reader of Aboyne in 1567. " 2 Cushnie Castle was a 16th-century tower house, about 6 miles (9.7 km) south west of Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, near Cushnie Burn, in the Glen of Cushnie on land held by the Cusnie family from the 12th century or earlier. Today there are few remains of the castle, other than the original castle vault. Early History of the Cusay familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Cusay research.
