Etymology of Crosfield

What does the name Crosfield mean?

The Anglo-Saxon name Crosfield comes from when the family resided at the cross-field, a "the field that lay crosswise." 1

Another source has a slightly different understanding of the etymology. Harrison feels the name means "dweller at the Field of the Cross [Middle English cros, Old Norse kross + Middle English Old English feld]." 2

Early Origins of the Crosfield family

The surname Crosfield was first found in Lancashire where they held a family seat at Poulton le Sands near Morecambe. They were also seated at Cartmel.

The earliest entry in early rolls was that of John Crowchefylde who was listed in the Close Rolls, 8 Edward IV (during the eighth year of the reign of King Edward IV. - 1469-1470.) 1

Later, the Lancashire Wills at Richmond included entries for William Crosfeild, husbandman, 1618; John Crosfeild, of Cartmel, 1635; and Richard Crossfield, of Poulton, 1669. 1
