Although very much an Irish name, the roots of the name Cordua can possibly be traced to Spain. Following the defeat of the Spanish Armada, several Spaniards were captured in Connacht, including one Don Louis de Cordua. The name may stem from this. Alternately, it has been suggested that the name was a corruption of the English surname Cardew, originally a toponym from a place in Cumberland.
