The name Cletherough is part of the ancient legacy of the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is a product of when the family lived in the area of Clithero in the county of Lancashire, beside the river Ribble.

Early Origins of the Cletherough family

The surname Cletherough was first found in Lancashire at Clitheroe, a town and civil parish in the Borough of Ribble Valley. The name Clitheroe is thought to come from the Anglo-Saxon for "Rocky Hill." The town is home to Clitheroe Castle, a motte and bailey castle which probably dates back to before 1086 as there is reference to it as "castellatu Rogerii pictaviensis" in the Domesday Book. In 2007, the castle was restored to its original beauty and is now open to the public. The Honour of Clitheroe is an ancient grouping of manors and royal forests centered on Clitheroe Castle. The Battle of Clitheroe was fought 10 June 1138 between Scots and English knights.

The language was changing, incorporating pieces of other languages, and the spelling of names changed with it. Cletherough has been spelled many different ways, including Clitherow, Clitheroe, Cletherow, Clyderow, Cliderow and many more.

Migration of the Cletherough family to the New World and Oceana

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Cletheroughs to arrive in North America: Robert Clitheroe who settled in Jamaica in 1684; John Clitheroe settled in Virginia in 1731.
