Etymology of Chads

What does the name Chads mean?

Chads is an ancient Anglo-Saxon surname that came from the Old English personal name Ceadd, also rendered as Ceadda. Unlike most Old English personal names, this name remained in use for a substantial length of time after the Norman Conquest. The popularity of the name was perhaps aided by the exploits of St. Chad, who was the third Bishop of Litchfield in the 7th century.

Early Origins of the Chads family

The surname Chads was first found in Norfolk where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Migration of the Chads family

For many English families, the political and religious disarray that shrouded England made the far away New World an attractive prospect. On cramped disease-ridden ships, thousands migrated to those British colonies that would eventually become Canada and the United States. Those hardy settlers that survived the journey often went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Chads or a variant listed above: William Chadd who settled in Maryland in 1742; John Chadd settled in Boston Massachusetts in 1768; Mary Chadd arrived in Virginia, aged 17; in 1635; Frances Chadds settled in Pennsylvania in 1682..
