The name Carlesse is an ancient Anglo-Saxon name that was given to a person who was a person who was believed to be free from care or unconcerned. The nickname is derived from the Old English word carleas, which referred to a "cheerful, merry" person. [1]

One source claims that the name is a derivation of "Carlos, or its original, Carolus," [2] and we shall see later, Carlos was indeed still used by some people as late as the 17th century.

The surname Carlesse was first found in Gloucestershire, but some of the family were found in Lancashire at Welsh Whittle in early times. "In that of Edward III., Sir William Careles held the manor, so called, of Walshwittell. " [3]

Migration of the Carlesse family

To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Carlesse were among those contributors: Andrew Carelesse, who settled in Virginia in 1650; Joane Carelesse, who arrived in Virginia in 1653; Thomas Careless, who arrived in Virginia in 1737.
