Of all the Anglo-Saxon names to come from Britain, Byfithey is one of the most ancient. The name is a result of the original family having lived near a ford, a shallow place in a river or stream which could be crossed by wading. The surname Byfithey is derived from the Old English words bi, which means by, and ford, which means ford. The surname Byfithey may also be derived from residence in the settlement of Byford in Hertfordshire.

Byfithey Early Origins

The surname Byfithey was first found in Herefordshire where they held a family seat from very ancient times, long before the advent of the Norman Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066 A.D.

The Great Migration

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Byfitheys to arrive in North America: William Byford who arrived in Philadelphia in 1880; Thomas, William, and Martha Byford, arrived in Barbados in 1664; and later transferred to the mainland in Virginia.
