The roots of the Anglo-Saxon name Byfforde come from when the family resided near a ford, a shallow place in a river or stream which could be crossed by wading. The surname Byfforde is derived from the Old English words bi, which means by, and ford, which means ford. The surname Byfforde may also be derived from residence in the settlement of Byford in Hertfordshire.

The Great Migration

For many English families, the political and religious disarray that shrouded England made the far away New World an attractive prospect. On cramped disease-ridden ships, thousands migrated to those British colonies that would eventually become Canada and the United States. Those hardy settlers that survived the journey often went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Byfforde or a variant listed above: William Byford who arrived in Philadelphia in 1880; Thomas, William, and Martha Byford, arrived in Barbados in 1664; and later transferred to the mainland in Virginia.
