The surname Busher is derived from the Old French word buschier, which means woodmonger. The surname may have also been an occupational name for a butcher; in this case, the derivation is from the Anglo-French words bocher and boucher, which are both derived from the Old French words bochier and bouchier. Busher may have also been a nickname derived from the Old French phrase beau-sire, which means fair sir, and is an address of respect or courtesy.

On cramped disease-ridden ships, thousands migrated to those British colonies that would eventually become Canada and the United States.
