Etymology of Bromhal

The ancestors of the name Bromhal date back to the days of the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. The name is derived from their residence in the parish of Bramhall in Cheshire. The name is literally from the Old English words brom which means broom and halh which means hollow. Combined they mean hollow where the broom (gorse) grows.

Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Bromhals to arrive on North American shores: John Brumwell, who settled in Barbados in 1635; Richard Bromwell, who came to Maryland in 1674; Wm. Brumwell, who arrived in Virginia in 1665; Anne Brumwell, who came to Virginia in 1703.
