Braithwait History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms



Among the the peoples of ancient Scotland, the first to use the name Braithwait were the Strathclyde- Britons. Braithwait was a name for someone who lived in any of the places so named in Cumberland or Yorkshire. This place-name derived from the Old Norse words for a broad clearing.

The surname Braithwait was first found in Cumberland, where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.
