What does the name Boxes mean?

Boxes is a name of Anglo-Saxon origin. It was a name given to a person with a jaundiced complexion. The Old English word box referred to a box-tree or box-wood, and in Old English use indicated a yellowish color. The surname Boxes may also refer to residence near a box-tree. The name may also indicate residence near the settlements of Box in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, or Box Hall in Hertfordshire.

Early Origins of the Boxes family

The surname Boxes was first found in Wiltshire where they held a family seat from very ancient times. They held a family seat as Lords of the manor of Box, where there is an ancient Gothic church containing twelve bells, as well as a medicinal spring, the village also begins a railway tunnel one and three quarter miles long where the line proceeds to Bath. The name appears in the thirteenth century in the Rotunda Oblitus et Finibus.

To escape oppression and starvation at that time, many English families left for the "open frontiers" of the New World with all its perceived opportunities. In droves people migrated to the many British colonies, those in North America in particular, paying high rates for passages in cramped, unsafe ships. Although many of the settlers did not make the long passage alive, those who did see the shores of North America perceived great opportunities before them. Many of the families that came from England went on to make essential contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. Research into various historical records revealed some of first members of the Boxes family emigrate to North America: Benjamin and John Box who settled in Virginia in 1623; followed by Anthony, Benjamin, John, Mary, and Thomas Box who settled there in 1637; Anne Box settled there later in 1679.
