Early Origins of the Blantyre family

The surname Blantyre was first found in Lanarkshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Lannraig) a former county in the central Strathclyde region of Scotland, now divided into the Council Areas of North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, and the City of Glasgow, where they held a family seat in their territories. The Norman influence on Scottish history considerably influenced the crown and government in the period between King Malcolm Canmore (1058-1093) and King David (1124-1153). Many Norman nobles were either invited or escaped into Scotland following the example of Margeret, wife of Malcolm Canmore, who actively recruited these Normans to their court. There seems to be a close relationship to the original Stewarts and the Earl of Levanx who granted the lands of Blantyre to Stephen in 1248.
