The surname Betchworth was first found in Surrey where they held a family seat from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. They were conjecturally descended from Richard FitzGilbert, a Norman noble who was granted the Old Mill and Church at Becesworde (Betchworth) at Betworth, later to become known as Betsworth in that shire. The Church still has eleventh century fragments and the Old Mill was rebuilt in the 16th century.

Many of those families went on to make important contributions to the young nations in which they settled. Early immigration records have shown some of the first Betchworths to arrive on North American shores: Francis Betsworth who settled in Virginia in 1780.
