Appeleby History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The ancient Scottish name Appeleby was first used by the Strathclyde-Briton people of the Scottish/English Borderlands. The original bearer of the name lived in various places so named in England and Scotland. Appleby is derived from the old Norse apall, or "apple" combined with byr, meaning "farm."

Early Origins of the Appeleby family

The surname Appeleby was first found in Westmorland, where they held a family seat as Lords of the manor of Appleby from about the year 1250, which later became the county town of Appleby. This town was frequently sacked and plundered and was a favorite target of raids north of the border.

Appeleby Spelling Variations

Spelling and translation were hardly exact sciences in Medieval Scotland. Sound, rather than any set of rules, was the basis for spellings, so one name was often spelled different ways even within a single document. Spelling variations are thus an extremely common occurrence in Medieval Scottish names. Appeleby has been spelled Appleby, Applebie, Appilby, Appilbie, Appeley and many more.

Migration of the Appeleby family to the New World and Oceana

Such hard times forced many to leave their homeland in search of opportunity across the Atlantic. Many of these families settled along the east coast of North America in communities that would become the backbones of the young nations of the United States and Canada. The ancestors of many of these families have rediscovered their roots in the 20th century through the establishment of Clan societies and other patriotic Scottish organizations. Among them: William Apleby, who settled in Virginia in 1623; Robert Appleby settled in Nova Scotia in 1774; John Appleby settled in Virginia in 1652; William Appleby settled there in 1645.
