The ancestry of the name Alldums dates from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. It comes from when the family lived in an enclosed place. The surname Alldums literally means dweller at the old enclosure or dwelling.

Early Origins of the Alldums family

The surname Alldums was first found in Essex, Suffolk and Yorkshire at Aldham. In all cases, the place name meant "the old homestead," or "homestead of a man called Ealda," from the Old English personal name + "ham." [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

Aldham, Essex and Aldham, Suffolk were both listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 and both were listed under the same spelling, Aldeham. [2]CITATION[CLOSE]

Another branch of the family was found at Elford in Staffordshire. "Before the Conquest the manor [of Elford] belonged to Earl Algar, and in the reign of Henry III. was held by William de Alderne, whose descendants continued to enjoy it until the marriage of the heiress of Sir John Alderney with the Stanleys, when the property passed to that family." Migration of the Alldums family to the New World and Oceana

Families began migrating abroad in enormous numbers because of the political and religious discontent in England. Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations. Some of the first immigrants to cross the Atlantic and come to North America bore the name Alldums, or a variant listed above: Daniel Aldam aged 27 who settled in Maryland in 1775.
