The ancestry of the name Aclown dates from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. It comes from when the family lived in either of two parishes called Aclom in the county of Yorkshire.

The surname Aclown was first found in the north Riding of Yorkshire where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Aclam, an ancient village with a Church, a village which dates back to the bronze age. At the time of the taking of the Domesday Book in 1086 this land was held by the Count of Mortain from the King.

The Great Migration



Families began migrating abroad in enormous numbers because of the political and religious discontent in England. Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations. Some of the first immigrants to cross the Atlantic and come to North America bore the name Aclown, or a variant listed above: William Andrew Acklam landed in America in 1750.
