The illustrious family Winbourn claim descent from Wimborne Minster, St Giles, Monkton in Dorset 1 which dates back to the late 9th century when it was known as Winburnan. 2 By the time of the Domesday Book of 1086, the place name was known as Winburne. 3 Later in 1236, records show the place name as Wymburneminstre. 2 The name was "originally the name of a river (now called Allen) 'meadow stream' from the Old English 'winn' + 'burna' " for 'mynster' meaning 'monastery.' 2

Wimborne-Minster (St. Cuthberga) is a markettown and parish, and the head of the union of Wimborne and Cranborne. "This place, which is of remote antiquity, was in the time of the Romans of considerable importance as a station to their camp at Badbury, and by them was denominated Vindogladia, or Ventageladia, terms descriptive of its situation near to, or between, two rivers. The Saxon appellation of Vinburnan, whence the present name is obviously deduced, is of similar import; and the epithet of Minster, from the ancient monastery, is added as a terra of distinction." 4
