The French name Vincendeau first arose during the Medieval period in the Languedoc region. It is derived from when the family having lived in the Languedoc area of France. However, the name Vincendeau could also be derived from the Old French personal name Vincent, meaning victor or conqueror.

Early Origins of the Vincendeau family

The surname Vincendeau was first found in Languedoc, where this distinguished family held a family seat since ancient times.

The first member of the family who is mentioned is Giraud de Vincens, Lord of Brantes, of Savoillans and of Saint-Léger, in the county of Venaissin, who married in 1200. The family pursued its beliefs with vigor and as such they participated in the Crusades where nine Knights were granted the Order of Malta. From the original line of Venaissin, many branches of this noble family formed, such as the Vincens of Mauléon-Causans, of Savoillans, of Prapiac, of Servane and of Agoult. Due to their noble status in society, this distinguished family formed many alliances with the Caromb, Bonvalet, Ancelli and Mauléon families and as a result of these alliances the Vincens became the Lords of Causans.

In August, 1667, the Barony of Causans, situated near the principality of Orange, was given to Claude de Vincens of Causans by letters patent from Henri of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Participating with distinction in the army were Louis de Vincens of Mauléon, Marquis of Causans, Lieutenant of the King at the government of Provence and Jacques de Vincens of Mauléon, Lord of Astoaud, Lieutenant of the King in 1723. A prestigious member of the family was Jean-Joseph de Vincens of Mauléon, Marquis of Causans and Colonel of the la Marche regiment during the 1700's.
