When the ancestors of the Stybils family emigrated to England following the Norman Conquest in 1066 they brought their family name with them. They lived in Somerset. Their name, however, is a reference to Estaples, Normandy. Etaples is a small seaport on the French coast about 10 miles from Boulogne. Alternatively, the name could have been an occupational name for someone who works in a stable, or someone who lives near a stable. 1 Early Origins of the Stybils familyThe surname Stybils was first found in Somerset where one of the first records of the family was Robert del Estable who was listed there in the Assize Rolls of 1270. Walter de la Stable was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of Worcestershire in 1275 and later Robert atte Stable was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of Sussex in 1327. 2 Staple Fitzpaine dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086 and at that time was a small hamlet having a Mill and 100 goats. The original name of this hamlet was Estapla. The Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 list the following: Alan le Stabler in Cambridgeshire; William le Stabler in Huntingdonshire; and Thomas le Stabeler in Lincolnshire. 1 Early History of the Stybils familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Stybils research. Migration of the Stybils familyTo escape the uncertainty of the political and religious uncertainty found in England, many English families boarded ships at great expense to sail for the colonies held by Britain. The passages were expensive, though, and the boats were unsafe, overcrowded, and ridden with disease. Those who were hardy and lucky enough to make the passage intact were rewarded with land, opportunity, and social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families went on to be important contributors to the young nations of Canada and the United States where they settled.
