He was the son of Anthony Stapley of Framfield, Sussex, by his third wife, Ann. The Stapley family moved about 1615 from Framfield to Patcham. Stapley was one of the judges of Charles I. He was present at Westminster Hall on 27 Jan. 1648 when sentence was pronounced, and signed the death-warrant on 29 Jan. He died...

Migration of the Staply family

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Staplys to arrive in North America: Stephen Stapley settled in Norfolk Virginia in 1823.
