Early Origins of the Slaning family

The surname Slaning was first found in Devon where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. "At Bickleigh [Devon] there still remains the old house of the Slannings. Of the Slannings, who were somewhat intimately connected with Plymouth, and who were settled at Shaugh before Bickleigh, the most distinguished member was Sir Nicholas, one of the ' four wheels of Charles's wain,' who was killed at the siege of Bristol, 1643. " 1

Again in Devon, we found John Slanning of Shaugh held Maristow in 1550 and the family held it until 1798 when it was bought by Sir Masseh Manasseh Lopes. 1

As Cornwall and Devon border each other, it's no surprised to find that "the manor of Pennance, [Cornwall] once belonged to Sir Nicholas Slanning, the governor of Pendennis Castle in the time of the civil war, and strongly attached to the royal cause. From this gentleman it passed by inheritance to the Heywoods of Maristow in Devonshire, in which family it remained until the year 1788." 2
