The Shepperd surname is thought to come from the ancient Scottish-English border region, where the people called the Boernicians once lived. It is a name for a shepherd, one who guarded sheep. In Scotland, the name was often Latinized as pastor in early charters. 1 In this latter case, the Biblical reference to paschal lamb, the Lamb of God or Agnus Dei should be understood.

Early Origins of the Shepperd family

The surname Shepperd was first found in Peebles, where William and Walter Shepherd (recorded in the Latin form "Pastor") were cited in legal documents in the year 1262. One hundred years later we find a branch of the family in Morayshire, where Henricus Scyphard held land in Elgin in 1363. 1

United States Shepperd migration to the United States +

The Scots who crossed the Atlantic were often on the run from poverty as well as persecution. They brought little with them, and often had nothing of their home country to hand down to their children. In the 20th century, Clan societies and other patriotic Scottish organizations have helped the ancestors of Boernician Scots to recover their lost national legacy. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Shepperd were among those contributors:
