Early Origins of the Seneschal family

The surname Seneschal was first found in Normandy, where the family has been a prominent family for centuries, and held a family seat with lands and manor. The family were well established in the region of Calvados and several members of the family distinguished themselves through their contributions toward the community in which they lived and were rewarded with lands, titles and letters patent confirming their nobility. Hamon le Seneschal was from Crevecoeur of the arrondissement if Lisieux which held his strong castle in the valley of Auge which is still remains. Hamon was Vice-Comte and was Sire de Crevecoeur, Lord of Thorigny and Creulli in battle of Val-es-Dunes in 1045. His two sons William and Robert were at the Conquest in 1066 and as the charter of the abbey of St.Denis in Paris.
