The name Pownde came to England with the ancestors of the Pownde family in the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Pownde family lived in Hampshire. Their name, however, is a reference to the Old English word pound, meaning an enclosure where animals were kept, and indicates that the original bearer lived near such a structure. Early Origins of the Pownde familyThe surname Pownde was first found in Hampshire where they were granted lands by Wiliam the Conqueror for their assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. They held a family seat as Lords of the manor of Drayton in that shire. Unfortunately the grant and details of the village and lands of Drayton, according to the Domesday Book taken in 1086 have been lost, and it is not possible to identify the residence at that time. Migration of the Pownde familyBecause of this political and religious unrest within English society, many people decided to immigrate to the colonies. Families left for Ireland, North America, and Australia in enormous numbers, traveling at high cost in extremely inhospitable conditions. The New World in particular was a desirable destination, but the long voyage caused many to arrive sick and starving. Those who made it, though, were welcomed by opportunities far greater than they had known at home in England. Many of these families went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Pownde or a variant listed above: John Pound, who settled in Jamaica in 1665; Susanna Pound settled in Virginia in 1698; James Pound settled in Barbados in 1684; Edward Pound settled in Maryland in 1774.
