The surname Harow was first found in Caithness (Gaelic: Gallaibh), the northern tip of Scotland, a Norse/Viking controlled region from the 9th century, which became the Earldom of Caithness, in Scotland where they held a family seat from ancient times, and where family tradition claims that they are descended from the natural son of King Sverrir of Norway. At early times the family migrated to South Ronaldsay where they gave their name to the lands called Halcro. Today Halcrow is a hamlet in northern Manitoba, Canada, but the origin of the place is unknown.

Migration of the Harow family
The New World was far from the oppressive regime of the old country. It was a place where there was more land than people and political and religious freedom were far easier to come by. Many Scots even got the chance to fight for their freedom in the American War of Independence. In recent years, interest in this heritage has been generated by Clan societies and regular highland games in North America. An examination of early immigration and passenger lists has revealed many people bearing the Harow name: Magnus Halcro who settled in Savannah, Georgia in 1774; with his wife Elizabeth and son Hugh; William Hacro settled in Virginia in 1653.
