The surname Halcroh was first found in Caithness (Gaelic: Gallaibh), the northern tip of Scotland, a Norse/Viking controlled region from the 9th century, which became the Earldom of Caithness, in Scotland where they held a family seat from ancient times, and where family tradition claims that they are descended from the natural son of King Sverrir of Norway. At early times the family migrated to South Ronaldsay where they gave their name to the lands called Halcro. Today Halcrow is a hamlet in northern Manitoba, Canada, but the origin of the place is unknown.

Migration of the Halcroh family
The Scottish settlers spread out along the fertile land of the east coast of what would become the United States and Canada. They and many of their children went on to play important roles in the forging of the great nations of the United States and Canada. That heritage has been recovered by many in this century through Clan societies and other Scottish historical organizations. Archival documents indicate that members of the Halcroh family relocated to North American shores quite early: Magnus Halcro who settled in Savannah, Georgia in 1774; with his wife Elizabeth and son Hugh; William Hacro settled in Virginia in 1653.
