Some of the first immigrants to cross the Atlantic and come to North America bore the name Ethlington, or a variant listed above: Jon Etherington sailed to Barbados in 1634. Later he moved his family to the nearby island of St. Christopher. In 1771 Terrence Etherington sailed into the harbour of New York. Robert Etherington was to join him three years later in 1774.
