The chronicle of the name Essone begins with a family in the Pictish clans of ancient Scotland. The name is derived from Aythe where Aythe filius Thome received a charter of the lands of Fornochtis in Strathearn from Robert the Steward (later known as Robert II) around 1360. The next of the line was called Johem ayson iuuene. It can be seen how the surname Ayson is a derivative from "Aythe's son." The spelling and pronunciation changed over time, until it reached the modern form of Essone and its variants.

The surname Essone was first found in Angus (Gaelic: Aonghas), part of the Tayside region of northeastern Scotland, and present day Council Area of Angus, formerly known as Forfar or Forfarshire, where it was of the most ancient surnames in the region. Migration of the Essone family

The crossing to North America did not seem so great in comparison with the hardships many Scots endured at home. It was long, expensive, and cramped, but also rewarding. North America offered land and the chance for settlers to prove themselves in a new place. And many did prove themselves as they fought to forge a new nation in the American War of Independence. The ancestors of those Scots can now experience much of their once-lost heritage through the Clan societies and highland games that have sprung up across North America in the last century. A search of immigration and passenger lists revealed many important, early immigrants to North America bearing the name of Essone: Edward Eason who settled in Virginia in 1610, ten years before the "Mayflower"; William Eason settled in Maine in 1763; followed by John in 1770.
