 England The history of the Douthwayte family goes back to the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. It is derived from the family living in either Dowthwaite, in Cumberland or Dowthwaite Hall in the North Riding of Yorkshire. 1 2 The name literally means "a piece of ground cleared of wood, from the Anglo-Saxon thweotan, to cut." 3 4 Early Origins of the Douthwayte familyThe surname Douthwayte was first found in the Subsidy Rolls of Cumberland where John de Doventhuayt was recorded in 1332. Migration of the Douthwayte familySearching for a better life, many English families migrated to British colonies. Unfortunately, the majority of them traveled under extremely harsh conditions: overcrowding on the ships caused the majority of the immigrants to arrive diseased, famished, and destitute from the long journey across the ocean. For those families that arrived safely, modest prosperity was attainable, and many went on to make invaluable contributions to the development of the cultures of the new colonies. Research into the origins of individual families in North America revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name Douthwayte or a variant listed above: Abraham Dowthwaite who settled in Charles Town [Charleston], South Carolina in 1796 with his brother Robert; William Douthwaite arrived in Philadelphia in 1803.
