Their name comes from having lived in either Dowthwaite, in Cumberland or Dowthwaite Hall in the North Riding of Yorkshire. 1 2 The name literally means "a piece of ground cleared of wood, from the Anglo-Saxon thweotan, to cut." 3 4 Early Origins of the Douththwate familyThe surname Douththwate was first found in the Subsidy Rolls of Cumberland where John de Doventhuayt was recorded in 1332. Migration of the Douththwate familyTo escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Douththwate were among those contributors: Abraham Dowthwaite who settled in Charles Town [Charleston], South Carolina in 1796 with his brother Robert; William Douthwaite arrived in Philadelphia in 1803.
