The name Collage first arose amongst the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is derived from their having lived in Coldridge, in Devon. Alternatively, the family dould have originated in Colwich, a parish, in the S. division of the hundred of Pirehill, union, and N. division of the county of Staffordshire. 1

"A writer in West Scotland said there was a family or families named Colledge resident for many generations at Hawick, Darnick, near Melrose, and Lauder; in Edinburgh for over 200 years and also in Glasgow." 2

Early Origins of the Collage family

The surname Collage was first found in Nottinghamshire, where Brian de Colewich was registered in 1210. 3

The family were more often than not in "the west of England any court or group of cottages having a common entrance from the street is called a college, and residence at such a place. probably originated the name." 4

Records of the family are very scarce. The Wills at Chester list John Colledge, of Colne, dotkworker, 1639. 5

Migration of the Collage family

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Collage arrived in North America very early: George Colledge who arrived in Virginia in 1637.
