The distinguished name Carlyon hails from Carylon or Curyghon, which was located near Truro, Cornwall, England which "for a long time in the possession of the family." 1 The held an "estate in Cornwall, in which the family have long been eminent." 2

Interestingly, the place name was "anciently Caer Lyghon [Cornish caer, a fort] - Caerleon (Monmouth) = the Fort of the Legion. Like Camelot, what place was ever yet renown’d? Where, as at Carlion, oft, he [Arthur] kept the; Table-round." 3

Pointing to the ancient Norman ancestry of this name, we found Carlehon as a place name in Bretagne, France. 4 We presume that the family emigrated from France to England after the Conquest.

Early Origins of the Carlyon family

The surname Carlyon was first found in Carylon or Curlyghon near Truro, for a long time in the possession of the family. There is still a place called Carlyon (D. Gilbert, Carlian) in Kea. The name may be from car-lagen, the rock or dwelling by the pond or pool. Hals thinks "the family of Cur-Lyon, by its name and arms, were descendants of Richard Curlyon, alias King Richard I." 1

Ironically since this noted authors words were written, the place name was lost, but Carlyon was one of four new civil parishes created on 1 April 2009 for the St Austell area of south Cornwall.
