The history of the Brithwell family goes back to the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. It is derived from the family living in the settlement of Britwell in the county of Buckinghamshire, or in the settlement of Britwell Prior, in the parish of Salome in Oxfordshire. Miles Crispin was recorded as the proprietor of the latter lands, which were then called Brutuelle, in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Research into the origins of individual families in North America revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name Brithwell or a variant listed above: Joseph Brittle who arrived in Maryland in 1774.
