The Norman Conquest of England in 1066 brought much change to the island nation, including many immigrants with new names. Among these immigrants were the ancestors of the Bilingar family, who lived in Nottingham in the midlands of England. However, the family was originally descended from the Bellengers, the Knights of Facomberg in Picardy, France and the name has been corrupted from the name of the French Boulanger family, who were chevaliers (knights) of Hainaut and Flanders.

The surname Bilingar was first found in Worcestershire where John Belinger was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of 1275. 1

From this earliest record, we move to 16th century London where William Bellinger is buried at St. Peter, Cornhill in 1563; and the same church records show Thomas Bland and Rose Bellynger married at that time. William Bellinger and Dorothy Ferrybye were married in 1572-3 and later, Richard Ashman and Joan Belinger were married in 1620. 2

Migration of the Bilingar family

The unstable environment in England at this time caused numerous families to board ships and leave in search of opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad in places like Ireland, Australia, and particularly the New World. The voyage was extremely difficult, however, and only taken at great expense. The cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels caused many to arrive diseased and starving, not to mention destitute from the enormous cost. Still opportunity in the emerging nations of Canada and the United States was far greater than at home and many went on to make important contributions to the cultures of their adopted countries. An examination of many early immigration records reveals that people bearing the name Bilingar arrived in North America very early: Frederick Bellinger who settled in New York State in 1710; Henry Bellinger settled in New York in 1709; Marcus Bellinger arrived in New York in 1710; Ann Bellinger settled in Barbados in 1654.
